Saturday, January 16, 1904John Edward Hightower obituary
We do not speak of the dead to enhance their virtues. The soul that finds its strength in Christ needs not the words of approval, but the character whose foundation is faith in God should be an open book for all. When a good man is gone from earth, it is eminently befitting that we record our appreciation of him.
He was born December 23, 1849. When 16 years of age, he professed faith in Christ and joined the Baptist Church, and we have the fullest confidence that the recording angel wrote his name in the Book of Life.
His profession as mine foreman, naturally hazardous to the preservation of life was the cause of much anxiety to his loved ones and often he had said “Wife, do not worry, for when my master calls, I am ready” and it was in the performance of duty in this capacity that the summons came.
He was married to Nancy A. McKamey, September 20, 1868. Nine children blessed this union, all of whom are living.
Brother Hightower was ordained a deacon of the Coal Creek Baptist Church on Sunday after the 4th Saturday of September 1873, of which he was a loved member at the time of his death. He was a diligent laborer for the master, sowing good seed wherever he went.
To see him at his best was to see him at work in the Sunday School, an enthusiast in that capacity. In more than one instance, when his work took him from home into the mountains and destitute sections, he would at once organize a Sunday School. He sowed good seed. Who knows what the harvest will be. Let us trust the good husbandman to increase it to a hundred fold.
On December 10, 1903, God in his all-wise power, sent his angel and said “ It is enough. Come up higher.” The sudden removal of such a life from our midst leaves a vacancy and a shadow that will be deeply realized by all the members of this church and will prove a serious loss to the church and community.
While in sadness of soul we strive in vain to ken the mysteries of Providence and deeply deplore his untimely death, yet we bow in humble submission to the will of God. In his death, the church has lost one whose heart beat true to the cause and a valuable worker and in Christianity a true advocate. Let us mingle our tears of grief and sorrow with those of his loved ones and extend to them the divinest of gifts, sympathy. May they remember that while the home circle was broken and hearts made to bleed, that the circle around our Father’s throne has been enlarged by one of their loved ones.
May God, who is too wise to err and too good to be unkind, comfort you in this great sorrow. Let not your hearts be troubled, but be ye also ready.
